Brush and Scraper

OXO Outdoor, 2021

Role: Lead Mechanical Engineer
Company: P9
Volume: 10,000

Project goals

OXO set out to create an exclusive cast-iron cleaning set for REI: a brush and a scraper made for the outdoors. Because both products would be used outdoors, weight, volume and multifunctionality were the major design drivers.

Design challenges

More function, less cost. Reduce cost while increasing the multifunctionality of each tool.
Dishwasher-safe sealing. Seal the brush so no liquid gets trapped inside the handle after it goes through the dishwasher.
Hidden detent. Create a concealed detent between the sheet metal and the silicone.
Simpler tooling. Simplify the tooling and reduce the number of actions required.
